{The name Žemyna comes from the Baltics; a goddess in ancient Lithuanian culture, symbolizing “fertile earth”.}
The Heartwood & Hide collection is a visual memoir for several weathered sentinels I've encountered throughout the Pacific Northwest.
This hand drawn series was born from my travels through the great forests of the Banff, Revelstoke, Kootenay, Glacier, and Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forests stretching throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and Montana.
Once towering trees with blooming flora, these inspiring stumps are now gracefully returning to the soil. Through these drawings, I explore the symbolism of their deep-seeded roots, honoring the enduring spirit of what they once were, the silent history they hold, and the grand life cycle they’re a part of.
{I found the name “Žemyna” most suitable for this tree, inspired by the colorful fungi that was growing all around the wet earth in which she remained; her evanescence bringing forth new life.}
